Uno de los proyectos que me traía entre manos estos últimos meses y no había podido enseñaros antes era este Big Daddy, un encargo muy especial para el primer día del padre de un padrazo.
A Big Daddy, if you don't know it, is a creature from Bioshock, one of my favourite videogames. Big Daddys are the protector of the Little Sisters, "adorable" girls who walk around Rapture recollecting Adam from the dead bodies of the city.
Un Big Daddy, para los que no lo conozcáis, son unas criaturas de Bioshock, uno de mis videojuegos favoritos. Los Big Daddy son los protectores de las Little Sisters, unas "adorables" niñas que van por la ciudad de Rapture recolectando Adam de los cadáveres que hay por toda la ciudad. ¿No os parece adorable?
I wanted to make a big figure since a while and it was amazing, I enjoyed every step of the process (even when not everything was nice).
Hacía tiempo que quería hacer una figura de estas dimensiones y hacerlo con un personaje que me gusta tanto ha sido una gozada, he disfrutado cada momento del proceso (aunque no todo ha sido diversión y risas).
First of all, like any other sculpture, we should start with a wire structure and foil: the wire works like a hard skeleton and the foil gives the skeleton a base, this way we save clay and the final figure is lighter.
Primero de todo, como con cualquier figura, hay que empezar por hacer una estructura de alambre y papel de aluminio: el alambre crea un esqueleto duro e inseparable para toda la figura; mientras que el papel de aluminio le da una forma base a la figura, ahorramos arcilla y pesa menos la figura final.
Then, we start covering the structure with clay, in my case I used Sculpey Firm, trying to give some shape to the figure. At this point we need to use imagination, avoid show the figure to someone else, for them it's only a big bunch of clay with a weird shape, even if you think it's absolutely a Big Daddy.
Después empezamos a cubrir esta estructura con la arcilla, yo en este caso he utilizado Sculpey Firm, intentando darle forma a la figura. En este punto de la escultura hay que echarle mucha imaginación, evita enseñarle lo que estás haciendo a los demás, para ellos solo será un montón de arcilla con forma rara, aunque tú tengas súper claro lo que estás haciendo. Esta fase es una de las que más tiempo necesita.
Now starts the big deal. Here I lose myself and I start adding details everywhere and I forgot to make photos of the process. The lights are made with small glass cabochons of 8mm, very useful. Time to cook!
Entonces llega el momento torbellino. Aquí me pierdo, empiezo a añadir detalles y a darle forma tan rápido que se me olvida por completo hacer fotos del proceso. Las luces están hechas con pequeños cabochones de cristal de 8mm, me han venido genial para este trabajo. ¡A hornear!
I like to give some time to the base of the figure, create some scenarios for the character is special, the more details you give to the final figure the better. I used a round wood base that I bought in a dollar store and a thin sheet of clay on the top to make the floor tiles, a pipe and a cable.
Me gusta también dedicar tiempo a la base de la figura, crear escenarios acordes con el personaje le da un toque especial, cuantos más detalles mejor. Para hacerla he utilizado una pieza redonda de madera que compré en un bazar y con una lámina muy muy fina de arcilla en la parte superior he hecho unas baldosas, una tubería y un cable.
Once everything is baked I painted the base with acrylic paints. For this job I used Americana and Citadel paints with some textures. I added some sand with glue.
Una vez horneado pinté todo con pintura acrílica. Para esto utilizo pintura Americana y Citadel; la Americana la utilizo siempre para cualquier trabajo, la Citadel la tengo en colores metalizados o con texturas concretas para darle más forma a las figuras. Además añadí un poco de arena aplicando antes un poco de cola.
Then it's Big Daddy's turn. First I made a layer with black paint to have a dark base color. And then with a dry brush I painted with metallic paints all the light areas, with small touches. With the dry brush we get that texture so it looks like it's old and rusted.
Después llega el turno del Big Daddy. Primero le dí una capa de arriba a bajo de negro para darle una base de color oscuro. Después con las pinturas metalizadas fui añadiendo a toquecitos con un pincel casi seco por todas las zonas de luz de la figura. Con el pincel seco conseguimos darle un poco de textura a la figura para que parezca viejo, oxidado y estropeado.
Once everything is painted it's time to varnish everything. I've used an acrylic matte varnish from Liquitex and I love the results, it's the first varnish I use that is really matte. For the metallic parts I used a satin varnish from Sculpey.
Una vez la figura y la base están pintadas podemos barnizarlo todo. Para esta figura he estrenado un barniz acrílico mate de Liquitex y me ha encantado el resultado. Había probado otros barnices supuestamente mates pero siempre me dejaban un acabado satinado. En las zonas metálicas he utilizado un barniz satinado de la marca Sculpey, no quería utilizar uno brillante porque no creo que quedase bien tanto brillo.
For this figure I decided to add "water" to the base. This is possible thanks to the clear resin that you may saw in my past smaller figures. If you don't know how the resin works, it comes liquid in two components, you mix both components and pour the resin in a container with the desired shape to cure for a few hour, even days until it's hard. Like I hadn't the container with the exact shape of the base I made my own with clear plastic as a barrier.
Para esta figura, como la historia transcurre en una ciudad en el fondo del mar, decidí añadir "agua" en la base. Esto se consigue con resina transparente que habréis visto en otros de mis trabajos a pequeña escala. Por si no conocéis cómo se trabaja la resina, ésta viene en forma líquida en dos componentes, mezclas ambos componentes y pones la resina en un recipiente con la forma deseada a curar durante unas horas o incluso días hasta que se endurezca. Como yo no tenía un contenedor con la forma exacta de la base de mi figura improvisé con plástico rígido una barrera contenedora alrededor de la base.
It took around two days to dry and my entire work table ended full of resin drops, but after some finishing touches the Big Daddy was finished.
Costó aproximadamente dos días de secar y se llenó toda mi tabla de trabajo de resina (gafes del oficio), pero después de unos retoques y unos toquecitos de pintura la figura estaba terminada.
I've learned a lot making this figure and I know that the daddy who recieved it likes it. I want to make more figures of this size. I don't use to make them but I would love to make more because it's super funny and you learn a lot of new techniques with each of them.
He aprendido muchísimo haciendo esta figura y me consta que al gran papi que la recibió también le gustó. Este trabajo me ha animado mucho a hacer esculturas a mayor escala. No suelo hacerlas si no me las piden y tengo en mente algunas desde hace tiempo.
